Genuine Knoll Harry Bertoia Model 420 Chrome Wire Side Chair

An original Knoll Bertoia side chair, designed by Harry Bertoia in 1952 and made from welded steel wire with a chrome finish.

This example is stamped “Knoll” to the frame, confirming the manufacturer. The chair has the familiar single-piece wire shell, gently curved through the seat and back, supported on the characteristic sled-style base.

One of the best-known post-war chair designs, Bertoia developed the collection from welded steel rod, treating the chair almost as a piece of sculpture rather than conventional upholstered furniture. Knoll has produced the Bertoia collection continuously since its introduction in 1952.

This one has been left in its aged condition rather than restored, with surface rust and pitting across the chrome giving it a noticeably more worn appearance than cleaner examples.

Condition

Structurally complete and in well-used vintage condition. There is surface rust, oxidation and pitting throughout the chrome, particularly around the seat and welded intersections, together with general marks and wear from age and use. The condition is clearly shown in the photographs and forms part of the chair’s appearance.
